A Wonderful Teacher

A few months back, it was a lovely surprise to come across this old photo when clearing my parents’ house. For it captures such happy memories from a time which was so pivotal on the journey to now. And my mum and dad look so proud (they even arrived on time that day!).

These photos reminded me of my parents’ unwavering love and support but also what is possible with a great teacher at your side. Having someone who believes in you, someone who takes the time and care to understand your strengths and vulnerabilities as a fellow human not just a student, and who goes that extra mile to show you a way to learn and move forward.

And Martyn Rouse, my PhD supervisor, standing next to me was that teacher for me.

I still often think of the way he could phrase a criticism in the most gentle but powerful of ways: “Susi, reading your literature review is like being a beautiful butterfly in a garden flying from flower to flower but having no idea which direction the butterfly is heading!”. And I clearly recall the laughs and fun that we had along the way too.

But overarchingly, the deep care in which he helped and supported me and also the genuine commitment he had to inclusive practice stays with me. He continues to inspire me so much in my own work and remains deeply missed.
