Presence not Presents

“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”;
“Little children little worries, big children big worries”;
“Give with a warm heart rather than a cold hand”.

My grandma was full of wise sayings that still often spring to mind.

And one of which I particularly recall is, “All I want (my darling) is your presence not presents”. And this is always an important reminder at this time of year.

As educators, we spend a vast amount of time with other people’s children and families. And whilst this is always a privilege, having the holidays to rest and just be with our own always feels like treasured time.

As my own children grow, time feels palpably precious. With one towering above me now, and the other one not too far behind, the physical markers of time are clear to see.

I want to bottle these little moments in time because I know that really these are the big moments.
